[Research] Associate Professor TONOUCHI Akio, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science Discovered Mukitake (an Edible Mushroom, called Olive Oysterling in English, Scientific Name: Sarcomyxa Serotina) Includes Two different Species

26.12.2014

Have you ever heard about “MUKITAKE”?, which is a very popular mushroom that has a watery-smooth texture. It has become well known among experienced mushroomers that Mukitake (Olive Oysterling mushroom) has two types, yellow one and green one, which grows a little slower than yellow one.

The research group led by Associate Professor TONOUCHI Akio in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science, Hirosaki University proved that yellow one and green one are different species by molecular  phylogenetic analyses based on gene sequences and a detailed mycological analysis.
This group identified yellow one as Mukitake, which scientific name is Sarcomyxa edulis and green one as Osomukitake, which scientific name is Sarcomyxa serotina and published this research as “Biological characteristics and molecular phylogeny of Sarcomyxa edulis comb. nov. and S. serotina” in the Journal of the Mycological Society of Japan (2014), Vol.55 No.2 p19-28.
